Al Hajj Talib Bin Karim, Esq. is a media and civil rights lawyer whose
education, years of political and community activism, and diverse business
development experience have earned him a reputation for being one of the most
dynamic, prolific and captivating young lawyers in America.
Talib brings this unique mix of experience to bear in his current position as
Managing Principal for his law firm, the TEC Law Group, PLLC. In this role,
Talib manages a group of 15 lawyers and other professionals in providing legal
services to media companies; schools; land developers; and individuals in a
variety of matters from job discrimination and religious bias, to child custody
disputes and inheritance issues. Talib has also become one of America's most
well-known Muslim lawyers, as one of the founders of MLDEF---the Muslim Legal
Defense & Education Fund, a group with the mission of defending the rights
of Muslims in the United States and abroad.
The U.S. Air Force Academy and its Department of Astronautical Engineering
served as the launching pad for Talib's college-level academic training. Talib's
upbringing as the son of two political activists led him to depart the Air Force
Academy for Howard University, the training ground for many famous civil rights
leaders. At Howard, Talib earned degrees in both Engineering and Law, while
finding time to develop his talents as an advocate, community organizer, and
leader.
Starting as student, Talib has received a rich training as a community
organizer and political activist. Talib led a National Student campaign seeking
peace in the Middle East as well as worked to mobilize youth on issues from
conflicts in Africa to police brutality in the U.S. Talib's political career
goes back to his days as a 10-year old volunteer for his father's first
political campaign in the Detroit area. From then until now, Talib has worked in
all areas of electoral politics, including voter registration, fundraising,
media relations, and election law compliance. Talib has worked on political
races in Michigan, Tennessee, Georgia, California, and New York, including the
elections of former Maryland Governor Parris Glendening, former Congresswoman
Cynthia McKinney, former Congressman Mervyn Dymally, former Vice President Al
Gore, and President Bill Clinton.
Talib's work experience has been equally as enriching. In his 25 years of
employment, Talib has worked in government, in the private sector, and in the
non-profit field. Talib has worked in each of the three branches of the U.S.
Federal government---the Congress (with the U.S. House of Representatives and
Congressionally controlled Federal Communications Commission), the Executive
Branch (with the U.S. Census Bureau), and the Judicial Branch (with the
Federally controlled District of Columbia Superior Court). Talib has also gained
significant experience in the private sector while working for Fortune 500
companies like Ford Motor Company, as an Engineer, as well as for numerous small
firms, mostly in the media, legal, and fashion areas. Finally, Talib has worked
for renowned institutions Howard University and Wayne State University.
While managing his professional duties, Talib has dedicated himself to a
full-time Arabic language program at the Institute for Islamic and Arabic
Studies in America in preparation for his plans to study Islamic Law. Talib and
his wife, Delicia, a Mechanical Engineer, are also active supporters of Howard
University, where they first met.
